 about

Blake Clay ceramics is handmade by Rhianna Blake on Gadigal and Wangal land - Leichhardt Sydney, Australia.

She makes wheel thrown and hand built forms with a focus on function and tactility, creating beautiful one-of-a-kind contemporary ceramics that can be used and enjoyed every day. Rhianna enjoys the contrast between the two methods - wheel throwing is more precise and measured whilst hand building allows freedom to create more complex and sculptural silhouettes.

All Blake Clay ceramics are made with careful consideration of form and function and are made in a variety of clay bodies such as stoneware, terracotta and porcelain. Rhianna is a lover of glazes and goes through the rigorous process of creating and testing all glazes to accentuate the work in unique and subtle colour palettes.

Rhianna has obtained a Bachelor of Art Education from the University of NSW, College of Fine Arts with a fine arts major in Sculpture, Performance and Installation together with minor subjects in photography and ceramics. The essence of ceramics runs deep for Rhianna and invaluable knowledge has been passed down from her uncle and mother, both ceramic artists.

As well as making ceramics in her home studio in Leichhardt NSW, Rhianna teaches an array of art mediums including ceramics to junior and senior high school students in Sydney's Inner West.

"I enjoy the process of making and using the earthy elements to make something substantial. For me, its not about production, its about slowing down and creating simple and refined forms that can be appreciated and used in everyday life."

Blake Clay pieces are handmade and as such every piece is unique and from a very limited series. All pieces will always look lovely together but they will not be identical.

That is the beauty of handmade ceramics.

Rhianna invites you to watch the video below to show you some of the processes involved to make all Blake Clay ceramics from start to finish from her home studio in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt, Sydney Australia.
